Winter Skills

New for the 2027 winter season, we offer a bespoke winter skills course in the wild and beautiful French Pyrenees to provide you with the knowledge and experience to venture out in winter conditions.

With safety at the forefront of our mountain ethos, activities and adventures, we will show you how to look for and develop an awareness of your surroundings, perceive and recognise potential risks, and engage in specific skills training to help keep you safe during your snowy adventures. Maybe you want to venture out alone, as a small group of friends or make a family adventure? Perhaps you want to brush-up on your knowledge or progress your winter skills to another level? This course is designed to equip you with the mountain awareness you will need to spend time outside in colder climates, and aims to help you make good decisions in more risky conditions.

You will already have all your winter walking gear to keep you warm, and we will bring all the additional equipment you will need to access suitable terrain to test your skills – snowshoes and TPS (transceiver, probe and shovel). More-importantly, we will give you tips and advice, and show you how to use it properly! For more experienced winter adventurers, you are also welcome to bring your own equipment if you have it. We offer a bespoke service for all our activities, and can accommodate individuals or groups of up to 7 people.

Our two-day course covers:
– advice on kit
– explanations of the main tools used for safety in winter
– demonstrations on how to use transceivers, probes and shovels
– terrain reading (theory and practical)
– how to use local Météo services and how to read the weather in the field
– how to make good route-finding choices
– individual responsibility and group management
– avalanche searches
– how to help others
and more!

“A fantastic two-day Winter Skills course with David Norris at a couple of venues in the Pyrénées Ariégeoises… he leans on a depth of experience to deliver his courses, pitched with the emphasis on sharing his passion and learning.” (Jonnie)
