Pyrenees (Spain, Andorra, France)

WW2 Escape Routes
The Pyrenees has an extensive network of ‘escape routes’ that connect France and Spain. The dedication of the people of the resistance in these mountains was incredible – their extensive local knowledge of the hidden valleys and less-frequented passes were invaluable to help those fleeing to reach a safe haven. We offer the opportunity to follow some of these routes, taking you on pathways less trodden into some amazing secret corners of the Pyrenees. We collaborate with specialists in these escape routes, so that you will not only hike on some memorable trails but also learn about the history surrounding this unsung community. There are many escape lines we can follow with a variety of accommodation and lengths of hiking, below are just three examples of the many options we have. Please email us to make a bespoke ‘escape route’ trip with us.

‘The Cométe line’
This route stays mainly in the Basque country, starting in Biarritz and heading to Pamplona. This trip involves four full days of hiking with fantastic hotels and food en route.

‘Andorra Pass’
This route climbs its way into some of the wilder and higher parts of the Pyrenees. This trip takes us to the stunning location of the Rhule refuge and to the Andorran spa hotels – a wonderful mix of wilderness and luxury.

‘Chemin de la Liberté’
This route involves four days of challenging trekking, from St. Girons in France to Vielha in Spain. The accommodation uses a mix of simple valley hotels, a tent and a refuge. It is a beautiful hike filled with poignant history.
